Dholes

Dholes are a type of dog. Dogs are a type of mammals which means they are warm-blooded,have hair or fur and give birth to live babies.

Diet

Dholes are omnivores (eat both meat and plants). They mainly eat lizards, frogs, rodents, insects, wild pigs, deer, wild goats, hares, sheep, and time to time, a monkey. Dholes also eat fruit especially when food is scarce.

Appearance

Dholes vary in colours from rust red to sandy beige to charcoal gray depending on their climate and habitat. Their tail is brushy and fox-like often with a black tip on the end. Dholes usually have a white chest, belly and feet but not all of the time. Adults have a long tail and rounded ears. The males tend to be bigger and heavier then the females.

Found in eastern and southern Asia, Dholes occupy a wide range of climates and habitats including dense forests, scrub, steppes and alpine regions. They maintain a very large territory-up to 88 square kilometres!

Actions

Dhole are incredible athletes. They are speedy runners, great swimmers and amazing jumpers.Dholes make some extraordinary sounds. They can mew, scream, whistle and even cluck like a chicken!

  • A Dhole can jump over 2.1 metres straight up into the air!
  • When hunting as a pack, Dholes can catch prey over 10 times their body and can even fend off a tiger!
  • The whistling sound the Dhole makes is so distinct that it can be used to identify different Dholes!
